Center for Digital Health and AI Announced by the AMA

The American Medical Association (AMA) has seen increasing interest by physicians in health AI and digital health. Surveys done by the organization have found increased adoption of digital health tools, up to 3.8 per physician in 2022 from 2.2 per physician in 2016.

To further this growing physician interest, the AMA has established the Center for Digital Health and AI. The goals for the center include:

  • Bringing physicians into the loop regarding technology development and deployment.
  • Allowing physicians to shape health AI and digital tools by creating opportunities for them.
  • Providing needed education and tools for integrating AI.
  • Fostering partnerships with tech, research, government, and healthcare sectors to guide advancements.
  • Enabling physicians to develop benchmarks for safe, effective use of AI by collaborating with regulators, policymakers, and tech leaders.
John Whyte, MD, executive vice president and CEO of the AMA, said, “By launching this Center, the AMA is leading in this space so physicians have a say in the technology and clinical care of the future. Our goal is to harness innovation responsibly and effectively, so it improves patient care and reduces unnecessary burdens on physicians."
