A recent study found that AI search results often included social media links. Results found social media links in:

  • 67.66% of Google AI overview responses
  • 32.9% of Google AI Mode replies
  • 8.4% of ChatGPT replies.

Additional findings included:

  • YouTube, owned by Google, was most often cited in Google AI overview replies.
  • Reddit and LinkedIn were most often cited by ChatGPT replies, although those platforms, along with Facebook, were only cited in less than 1% of those replies.
  • Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations in search responses recently dropped considerably (86.4%) over a four-day period for reasons that are not known.
  • Reddit’s presence in Google AI responses should remain steady for the time being due to a data-sharing deal with Reddit.
  • Almost 40% of branded queries to Google AI mode got responses with social media citations, and almost half of nonbranded queries yielded responses with social media citations.
While each social media platform may need a customized approach, it seems clear that an active social media presence is important for AI search results.
